California Report: Guitarist Jim Nunally

Posted on January 18, 2023 by Azlyrics

Jim Nunally is a California-based musician’s musician, not so widely known despite having played extensively with many great California artists, including both the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience and John Reischman and the Jaybirds. He’s a sought-after producer, and nowadays spends most of his off time in the Nell & Jim Band, featuring duets with his musical mate, Nell Robinson. He’s also started his own line of Banjo Boy Coffee. There’s so much more to this talented picker, so read on below.

Thanks for your time, Jim. Tell us about your first guitar and how you were able to progress on it at a young age.

The guitar I first learned on was a Kay resonator-style guitar—I remember the action being very hard. It was one of a few guitars my dad had gotten in a trade for some mechanic work on someone’s car. It wasn’t my own guitar, it was my dad’s. The first guitar that was my own was a Hofner acoustic dreadnought shape, which my folks gave me for my birthday, I think I was 14. The first Martin guitar I owned, and still own, was given to me for Christmas in 1976. My brothers and parents all went in on that. It was one of the most wonderful gifts I’ve ever received.

Do you remember the first songs that you learned?

When I first started guitar I was eight years old. My dad taught me Old Paint with just D and A chord—a great song and simple to play.

Do you play anything other than the guitar?

I’ve dabbled in the mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and dobro. Did a little bit of learning on each of those, but have always stuck with the guitar as my primary instrument.

What influences were important in your early years?

My father, Darrell Nunally, was my biggest influence. He taught me the guitar, which he learned from his dad. Early influences would have to be Pat Dorn, Bob Smith, and John Blasquez, who are all local folks who showed me a lot of music, and turned me on to great music on records. It was their guiding me to listen to other music and their friendship that really inspired me.

Who are your favorite rhythm guitarists?

I got my sense of time from my dad. Tony Rice would be my all-time favorite rhythm guitarist, not only because of what he played but also because his tone was absolutely beautiful. As for swing jazz-type stuff, I really love David Johns’s playing. I met him at Weiser, Idaho, at the National Fiddle Championships around 1984. I learned a ton watching him play. Vern Baumann and Rich Levine were inspiring to me too.

When did you first hear a banjo and how did it impact you?

I probably heard it on Hee Haw or some other television show. My early music influence, Bob Smith, is a great banjo player, and was also patient in teaching me bluegrass music. I played with some other excellent players too, like Greg Clark and Phil Allen.

What differences do you see in the music you were exposed to in Arkansas versus California?

I’m actually from California. My dad was from Arkansas, and his dad moved the family to California during the Dust Bowl. The interesting thing about my dad’s timing was that it had a feel like Carl Perkins or Elvis. There’s a groove in that music that comes from the region those folks are from, cotton field country.

You played on the Grammy Award-winning True Life Blues: The Songs Of Bill Monroe. Can you talk about that?

It was a thrill and totally unexpected. I played guitar on a Kathy Kallick recording. At the time, that track was to be put on one of her solo CDs. Todd Phillips, who was producing the record for Kathy, was working on another project at the same time, and the track ended up being put on the True Life Blues CD by Sugar Hill Records.

Most guitarists would be thrilled to play with either Dawg or John Reischman, and you’ve played extensively with both. How did this affect your playing?

Well, those are two of the greats of the mandolin. I spent probably 16 years with Dawg and 17 years with John. Imagine playing hundreds of gigs standing next to those guys—it’s hard to explain how important that is. They’re both super supportive musicians, and were really great to me. You can’t buy that kind of education; it’s even crazier that you get to make a living while working with them.

I feel like there’s a power in both of their styles and technique. You learn to embellish that, or should I say, your playing adapts to their groove. I suppose that’s one thing that makes me a good rhythm guitarist—I strive to be supportive of the soloist. I was also able to work a lot on my melodic style of playing in John and David’s bands. They were very melodic, at least that’s the role I chose for myself with them. I did a lot of improv, yet they were doing material that lent itself to melodic playing.

How was your approach different when playing with each of them, and what did you learn?

I wouldn’t say my approach was different. They chose me to play with them because I was a good fit for what they were wanting in a guitarist. So I didn’t have to approach it in any particular way other than the way I was already playing. The music was traditionally based and I was already pretty steeped in that style, so it was simply a good fit.

You’ve done some interesting projects in film and TV. Care to elaborate?

The Snoopy cartoon, called Snoopy’s Family Reunion, was a fun one. It’s airing on the Disney network now. Snoopy and his siblings are born on the Daisy Hill puppy farm. As puppies, they form a bluegrass band. Mike Marshall, another incredible mandolin player, as you know, hired the band for the music. Snoopy plays bluegrass guitar, that’d be me. The band was Rob Ickes on dobro, Tony Furtado on banjo, and Kaila Flexer and Mike Marshall on fiddle. Todd Phillips, who plays bass, becomes a jug player somehow on the TV show. It originally aired on CBS.

Ha! So Dan Tyminski had George Clooney and you had Snoopy, who’s arguably more famous.

For another project, Béla Fleck hired the band to recut the theme song for the Beverly Hillbillies movie. Béla plays banjo of course, Mike Marshall plays mandolin, Sam Bush plays fiddle, Jerry Scheff plays bass, and Jerry Scoggins, the original singer on the television recording, sings. One interesting story Mr. Scoggins told me was that he ended up singing the song with Flatt & Scruggs instead of Lester Flatt because Lester sounded too much like a hillbilly! I also played on the SimCity soundtracks, which sold more than 40 million copies.

What influences or other artists do you listen to?

I listened to so much music at a very early age. I love Don Rich and Buck Owens, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jim Hurst, Eddie Pennington, Glen Campbell, Vince Gill—there are so many great players, too many to list. The current crop of players are really incredible, like Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle.

Is there a secret to making duets sound great?

It’s no secret that practice makes perfect, or at least gets you going somewhere, which may not necessarily be perfect or great. A key point to singing a nice duet is singing with someone who has an idea of the same sound you’re going for. My first deep dive into that experience was with Dix Bruce. We have very different vocal and guitar sounds, yet our blend was nice because we knew what we wanted our material to sound like. I approach it like that. In my duo with Nell Robinson, we have a natural Southern quality in our voices. My Southern sound comes from my father’s Arkansas dialect, and Nell’s from her Alabama roots. We’ve practiced a lot and that makes a big difference.

In my duo with Keith Little, and working with him in the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, it was a golden opportunity to sing with an incredible harmony singer. That stuff can rub off on you in a great way. Learning to try to fit your voice in with another person is a fun skill. I also did some great-sounding duets with Trisha Gagnon in the Jaybirds. Trisha has a really rich resonant voice, unlike my sound, yet we made some nice-sounding recordings.

Can you share some of your practice routines?

I usually practice when I’m getting ready for a music event, be it a gig or a recording session. I don’t have a regular routine. I simply try to learn the material as best I can and practice it ’till it feels right, then practice it more ’till it sounds right, then practice it some more. It can take a lot of time.

During the pandemic, all of our gigs were canceled and I had a hard time feeling up for working on anything. Playing for streaming events was hard for me because there was no instant feedback that you get from an audience. So I pretty much didn’t practice at all. It was the longest stretch of time I went without playing music. Then Nell and I got a couple of gigs and we did a weekly live stream for a while, and that got me a bit back into it. When Bill Evans put together the California Bluegrass Reunion tour, I had to practice to get my chops back in shape. I sounded pretty good but it didn’t come as easy as when I was playing mostly full-time.

So I spent about six weeks practicing three hours a day, and I was still in pretty rough shape compared to what it was like three years ago. Now that I’m in my 60s it takes longer and is a bit harder to keep in shape musically.

Do you compose much and, if so, what’s your process?

Good question. I’ve composed quite a bit. Nell and I have been looking at our original material, and collectively we’ve written 45 songs. I’ve also contributed to hundreds of arrangements via recording sessions. Those sessions are very much collaborative efforts, often right in the studio as you’re recording. A good producer will allow for that. As a writer, many times I have an idea of what I want the song to sound like. If I’m in an ensemble, say a five-piece bluegrass band, then I’ll arrange for that. If I’m in a duo or trio, that’s a different situation. So being open to those settings is helpful.

When I recorded my solo CD, Gloria’s Waltz, I initially tried to emulate what Tony Rice did with his Church Street Blues album, and I wasn’t pleased with what I was getting. In fact, I just about gave up on it. Then I ran it by Dix Bruce and asked if he would co-produce it. That was the best move I ever made. Dix came at it with a different take. He had great ideas and was helpful in the entire process, arranging for a solo, duo, trio, or a full bluegrass band. It turned out to be a great learning experience, and I dedicated the project to my mother, Gloria.

You’ve maintained a day job while playing music. How has that worked out?

My day job was part-time for the past 40 years, and I had a recording studio for 25 of those years. So it was very much music related after 1984, whether I was teaching guitar at the Fifth String in Berkeley and San Francisco, or private lessons. I tried to keep it music related as much as I could. The longest stretch of full-time work and part-time music was from 1977 to 1983, when I went to trade school and then worked at Kaiser steel as a welder. That was a challenging period because I was playing a lot of music at the same time. I went more full-time into music around 1984 after I invited one of my welding teachers to a gig. I told him I was pretty tired from playing so much and working as a welder and I didn’t know what to do. He saw me playing with Heartland, which was a really good band, and he said, “do this.”

It can be a challenge to get the right balance, but it’s really helpful to keep your hands in the music business in some way if you’re going to be a musician. It just so happened for me that the community college I went to for welding had a recording arts program. Since I already had studio experience, I decided to go that route and did a two-year program in the recording arts. Working in recording studios as an engineer and producer, as well as a guitarist, goes hand in hand with performing music.

What makes and models are your go-to instruments?

I bought a 1946 Martin D-18 in 1986. I played that guitar solely from when I bought it ’till 2017, when I was able to purchase a 1944 Martin D-28, thanks to my partner Nell. Those two are my main guitars. If I’m traveling for pleasure or playing at a jam I often take a newer Martin OM-21. I still have my 1976 Martin D-18 my family bought me, and I practice on that sometimes. I also have a Deering Sonata six-string banjo with nylon strings, and I love its old-timey tone. I’ve played it on nearly every gig since I got that instrument. It’s a great, super-affordable instrument.

Are there any upcoming Nell and Jim releases or shows in the works?

We’ve been thinking about recording another new album. The crazy thing is that our last CD, Western Sun, came out during the pandemic. We were just about to tour that recording, and all the gigs got canceled. It was a real let down. That’s one of our best records, and it was produced by Lowell “Banana” Levinger of the Youngbloods. He’s a great producer and we really enjoyed working with him. He loves the band and had wonderful things to say about us all.

As for shows, Nell and I are just starting to get some gigs happening. Please check out our websites, Nell and Jim and Whippoorwill Arts, to see the happenings there. It also looks like the California Bluegrass Reunion Band is going to be doing more gigs this year as well.

The shows with the all-star lineup of the Bill Evans and California Bluegrass Reunion have been great. What is the future for that ensemble?

We’ll likely be doing whatever gigs come our way. There have been some good calls coming in, but it may be hard to keep the same ensemble we’ve had at past shows due to scheduling conflicts. But that’s potentially a very fun change. There are some great alternatives who we’ve all worked with.

What time periods of music do you wish you could have witnessed?

Well, with YouTube these days you can just about get the feel for most of what I would be interested in. It certainly would have been amazing to see Jimi Hendrix or the Beatles live. I used to go to concerts all the time and got to see amazing people, like Ella Fitzgerald, Herb Ellis, Chet Atkins, George Jones, Buck Owens, and the original David Grisman Quintet many times. I started going to the California Bluegrass Association’s Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival the second year after it started.

Because my music roots are folk and country-based, I really got to hear a lot of it right in my own house with my dad. We played music for thousands of hours. When I started to get into playing seriously, at about age 14, we played most evenings. I didn’t know at the time what an unusual experience that was. So I was hearing the real deal right there in our house.

Are you still doing studio productions?

Lately I’ve been doing some accompaniment for Chad Manning’s lessons on Peghead Nation. I get calls now and then but nothing regular. I closed my studio in 2016. I co-produced Bill Evans’s new CD, Things Are Simple, which is just being released now. There are some other things in the works but nothing is firmed up just yet.

How do you know when a track is finished?

When you stop working on it. It really is that simple.

You have some instructional DVDs. Are you actively teaching these days?

I’m not teaching much now, but I have two instructional rhythm guitar DVDs that you can order by contacting me by email, or download from my website store. One DVD is called Strums and the other is Walks and Runs.

What are some basic instructional tips that you can share with players to help them get to the next level?

Practice along with recordings of the artists you want to sound like. That’s a great way to get a sense of timing and how it feels to play with a good band. Practice for at least a few minutes every day. Even 15 minutes a day will get you on the right path. If you feel pressed for time, play two or three songs then move on. Just do it as often as you can. Play live with others as much as you can. It helps you get that sense of bewilderment and how to cope with it. Like sometimes in a jam, things get off track, and how in the heck do you get back on? You can only experience how that works by playing live with people. Playing with recordings only takes you so far, playing with people live is a whole other ball game, and there are more challenges like the feeling of time. Let’s say you’ve been playing a song at home at a certain tempo, then you go to a jam and the tempo is played faster or slower which can feel disconcerting. You may have worked your solo out perfectly at home but in a jam, it might fall apart because of nerves or a strange feel, and other distractions.

What do you do when not playing music?

I go on walks with my partner. We travel, and we like to go out and have interesting vegan meals. We like to visit friends and family, and I like to work in the yard. I volunteer almost every week at China Camp State Park near our home. I’m learning Spanish, and that’s HARD! Talk about practicing every day—270 days at this point.

Is there anything else you want to say or that I forgot to ask?

I’d like to also mention that Dix Bruce is a great resource for lesson material at musixnow.com. Check out the recordings I played on with John Reischman and the Jaybirds at thejaybirds.com and the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience at Acoustic Disc.

An interesting part of working with high-profile people like Dawg and John and Nell is that you get to meet and perform with other great artists. For instance, we were shooting a video with the Jaybirds in a studio in Canada and Raffi happened to be there, so he did a cameo in the video. Nell Robinson did a great CD called Rose Of No Man’s Land, and her producer Joe Henry brought in Kris Kristopherson, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, and John Doe from X. With David we played with Beppe Gambetta, Del McCoury, John Sebastian, and others. That’s one of the fun perks of playing with folks like that.

Thanks much, Jim.

Thanks for thinking of me to do this.

Farm Bureau Insurance uses bluegrass for TV commercial

Posted on June 8, 2022 by Azlyrics

Farm Bureau Insurance in Tennessee has launched a new television advertising campaign featuring bluegrass music and a number of noted artists. It’s for their Medicare Educator program, and started running yesterday in many Tennessee markets.

Irene Kelley was cast as the female lead in the commercial, and she tells us that the producers of the spot reached out to Nashville’s bluegrass hub for pickers.

“Casting director Andrea Berwick called the Station Inn and spoke to Josh Ulbrich and Brandon Bostic. Josh and Brandon gave them some names and contacts for the lead female role and a few pickers. Two familiar bluegrass faces are John Martin on mandolin and Wes Horton on bass. Other cast members include dobro legend Grady Hayes, Ken Fly, Juli Tapken, Amelia Eisenhauer, Andy Eisenhauer, and Rhonda Eisenhauer. “

When they all got together for the shoot, the musicians were asked to play Keep On The Sunny Side, and it serves as the background audio for the commercial.

Irene recorded the spot when it aired last night.

Here ’tis…

Let’s hope this vibe spreads through the whole insurance industry!

California Report: Mandolinist John Reischman

Posted on June 6, 2022 by Azlyrics

John Reischman – photo by Snap Jackson

Grammy winner, mandolinist, composer, and instructor John Reischman has way too many credentials to be listed here. His bio tells the story of a musician’s musician and master of many styles, yet his sound is distinctly his own. His influences are many but he has influenced many more. From the Good Ol’ Persons to the Tony Rice Unit, and his own John Reischman & the Jaybirds plus the Harmonic Tone Revealers, his work spans several eras and is extended by his latest solo album, New Time & Old Acoustic.

Hey John, what does the rest of your 2022 musical calendar looks like?

Well, it gets pretty busy starting in June. Lots of camps but also a good number of festivals. I’ll be back at the CBA music camp, and I’m also happy to report that John Reischman & the Jaybirds will be performing at the CBA’s Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival. In addition to the CBA camp, I’ll be at the Montana Fiddle Camp, the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina, the Rockygrass Academy, and NimbleFingers in British Columbia.

Other festivals that the Jaybirds will be performing at include Music from the Forest in Shelton, Washington, Blue Waters Bluegrass Festival near Spokane, Washington, and TradFest in Santa Fe. I’ll also be playing with some wonderful musicians based locally here in Vancouver. Trent Freeman and Patrick M’Gonigle on fiddles, Allison de Groot on banjo, Mark Kilianski on guitar, Joseph Lubinsky-Mast on bass, and me. The group is called Stringband Sundae because of a weekly Sunday night gig we had at a local club. It’s very part-time because of everyone’s various touring schedules, but we will be playing at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.

This fall I’ll be playing some shows with the California Bluegrass Reunion. It’s a fun group of old friends: Darol Anger, Jim Nunally, Bill Evans, Sharon Gilchrist, and Chad Manning. It’s sort of an outgrowth of Bill Evans’ California Banjo Extravaganza, but with fewer banjos and more fiddles.

Has the band changed much since you got back out on the road?

I don’t think so. The Jaybirds are very happy to be out playing shows. We’ve got some new material which will hopefully lead to a new recording before too long.

Have you seen an uptick in online instruction in the last couple of years?

I don’t do a lot of private instruction, although I did some during the pandemic via Zoom. Most of my teaching is done at camps and through my two courses for Peghead Nation: Melodic Mandolin and Old-Time Mandolin. I’ve really enjoyed sharing tunes through Peghead Nation. A few camps opted to shift to Zoom over the past two years, but it looks like all the workshops I’m teaching this year will be in person.

Congratulations on the new album. It has a nice variety of tunes and players. How is this different from your previous releases?

Thank you. It’s stylistically a bit more varied. In addition to my originals that are influenced by bluegrass and old-time music, I wanted to revisit some of the “new acoustic” music I played in the ’80s. Other than that, it’s similar in approach to my album Walk Along John. Varied combinations of musicians playing my originals, for the most part.

Was it a challenge to get a consistent sound and vibe with the multiple sessions and locations?

Ivan Rosenberg, who mixed and mastered it, did a great job in making it sound cohesive even though it was recorded at several different studios. I have to give him the credit for making it flow sonically. Also, I approached each of the sessions with the same criteria: good studio and engineers, good mics, and musicians whose playing inspires me.

Are these tunes all new?

The tune Salt Spring has been around for a long time. I wrote it in 1999 or 2000, and the Jaybirds recorded it on our first CD. Then the live video we made became popular. I wanted to do a newer version with some of the young musicians I admire and have enjoyed playing music with: Alex Hargreaves, Allison DeGroot, Max Schwartz, and Molly Tuttle. Suzanne’s Journey and Ballyhooly were written in 2018 while I was on tour in Ireland with Greg Blake. Crescent Moon was a melody I’ve had for a while and I finally came up with a chordal accompaniment that I liked. The Fretless, and Trent Freeman in particular, did a wonderful job with the arrangement. The rest were mostly written in 2020 and a couple in 2021, so it’s mostly new material.

Did you release any singles? With all those great tunes, how do you go about choosing which to feature?

David Benedict, who’s a friend and a fantastic mandolin player, helped me with the publicity for this recording. He suggested releasing a few double singles based on the title – New Time & Old Acoustic. I thought it was a great idea to approach it that way and released one single representing the New Time, and the other Old Acoustic. The first ones were Salt Spring and Cascadia.

Is it harder to connect with a live audience playing instrumentals than, say, a vocal tune with nice harmonies?

That’s not been my experience. I find a slow tune with a beautiful melody and interesting chord changes—or a well-played, up-tempo tune—go over really well. I used to go see the original David Grisman Quintet, which was all instrumental, and the audience would go nuts!

A lot of instrumental tunes seem well suited for film. Has any of your work been in TV or films?

A while back I had two tunes from Up in the Woods licensed for a TV movie called Dodson’s Journey. They were filming in Vancouver and looking for bluegrass musicians for a scene. I took my CD to their production office and they called and said, “We can use these two tunes. Can you put a band together for the scene?” So I did, and it became a nice financial windfall for a few years, as the movie was shown in different markets around the world.

In the age of streaming, great tunes at the back of the album—like Rosco’s Ramble, The Old Steeple, and Dandy Longlegs—may get shortchanged. Is that something you think about when deciding the album order?

Not in the sense of tunes later on the album being shortchanged. I do think a lot about the sequencing and of the listening experience as a whole program, so I work around that. Start with a good first tune, then flow from tune to tune, and consider key relationships from one tune to the next.

At over seven minutes, Old Road to Kingham is fairly ambitious. Have you recorded tracks that long previously?

That’s the longest tune I’ve ever recorded. First of all, the form is long, with three parts, and there are three solos over the full form, plus an intro and outro. I definitely wanted this to have almost a jazz approach, where the soloists could improvise and develop their ideas. Todd Phillips and Chris Eldridge both played beautifully on this tune.

What surprised you about this release?

About five of these tunes were done during the pandemic and recorded one part at a time. I’d start by tracking the rhythm mandolin, then play the melody to that, and then I’d send it out to the various musicians to add their parts. It’s definitely not my preferred way to record, but I’m happy with how it all turned out. I think these tunes sound like everyone’s playing in the same room.

Tell us about the title New Time & Old Acoustic.

It’s just a play on the terms “new acoustic” and “old-time.” Some of my tunes are influenced by old-time music but they probably have too many chords, so I refer to them as new-time tunes. The CD also revisits some of the music I used to play that was referred to as “new acoustic.” That was 40 years ago though, so it’s not really new anymore. That’s where the “old acoustic” comes from. The title is basically something I think is funny!

I’ve seen you record snippets of melodies into your phone. Is that how most tunes get started?

The voice memo feature is very handy for remembering melodies on the fly. Tunes come to me in a variety of ways, so if I’m on a walk, and something occurs to me, I’ll hum the melody into my phone. I start by humming an arpeggio of the home key, then the melody. It makes it easier to decipher later.

Do you think about the instrumentation when composing?

Occasionally. For my tunes Nesser and Rosco’s Ramble, I wanted to write something that would sound good on the banjo. For Nesser I came up with the A part while walking, then developed the B part on the mandolin once I got home. I think Rosco’s Ramble had a similar origin. Other times the melody suggests the instrumentation or arrangement. The melody to Johnson Warhorse really benefitted with twin fiddles taking the lead.

Your tunes are for the most part not all that difficult to play compared to other tunes. Is that planned or happenstance?

I suppose it’s happenstance. It’s true, I don’t try to write anything that is intentionally technically challenging. I’m just trying to come up with melodies that sound good to me and hopefully don’t sound like other tunes. One thing that I enjoy is figuring out what chords sound the best behind any given melody. The right set of chords can make a melody stand out.

How do you go about selecting chords for a melody?

Well, one example is in Suzanne’s Journey. I decided it should be in the key of G. On the B part of the tune, the melody begins by sliding into an E note. My first instinct was to harmonize it with an E minor chord, but then I wanted to explore other options. I knew a C chord and an E minor both share two common tones—E and G, and once I tried the C chord instead of E minor, the tune sounded more distinctive to me. Learning a bit about chord substitutions can be very beneficial when harmonizing a melody.

A lot of your tunes are jam favorites. which must be rewarding. Is there ever a downside to that?

Not really. Although someone once sent me a picture taken at a jam of a little sign with Salt Spring crossed out! Like it was being played so much that it got banned from the jam session. Sort of like when you go to a music store and there is a sign forbidding the playing of Stairway to Heaven. I think it’s pretty funny. I’m honored that so many folks have picked up on my tunes. I’ve heard tell of all-Reischman-tunes jam sessions.

Have you always used open tunings or is it a more recent thing?

I started doing open tunings when I wrote the tune Ponies in the Forest in 1996. On that tune the E strings are tuned down to D, so it’s GDAD. I just tuned the mandolin that way and the tune came out fully formed. I also happened to be sleep deprived at the time, so maybe that added to the creativity. Old Road to Kingham, from my new CD, was also written in this tuning. It’s in B minor. I also like GDGD. I wrote the tune The Old Steeple in this tuning.

What’s your most Monroe-like tune?

Maybe Indiana Firefly? It was inspired by the Good Ol’ Persons’ trip to Bean Blossom in the ’80s and being in a place with all that bluegrass history. And it was the first time I ever saw fireflies! Also, Dandy Long Legs is reminiscent of some of Monroe’s later tunes.

How many instruments do you generally travel with and which ones?

I mostly always travel with my old Gibson. I’d sometimes bring my Lawrence Smart mandola when playing with Scott Nygaard and Sharon Gilchrist. On occasion, I’ll travel with my Michael Heiden F5. It depends somewhat on if it’s a driving trip or a flying trip.

The Harmonic Tone Revealers album is one of my favorites. Are there any plans for more recordings?

That was a fun recording to make. That trio (with Scott Nygaard and Sharon Gilchrist) was very part-time, mostly playing shows around the Bay Area. Then Sage Arts Studios, near Arlington, Washington, generously offered us studio time. We drove up there from the Bay Area, and I booked about five or six shows along the way there, so we were able to really dial into the music. That approach to recording is the ideal way to go about it. The studio is beautiful and sounded great. We set up pretty close to one another and didn’t use headphones so it was pretty natural. There were no overdubs, but we did a bit of editing on some tracks. For instance, if the mandolin solo was better on a different take than the best overall take, we might edit it into the master take. Nothing is scheduled as far as another recording, but you never know.

What did I forget to ask?

It would be good for folks to know that I’m a California native and still tour California several times a year. I love where I now live in British Columbia, but I keep a strong connection to the state where I was born, grew up, played a lot of music, and have so many friends.

Thanks for your time, John, and looking forward to seeing you at camps and festivals.

The CD can be purchased from John’s website and is available on the standard streaming sites.

Having a Coffee with… Maddie Denton

Posted on November 24, 2021 by Azlyrics

This is fun series in which we ask bluegrass music personalities, some famous, some not so famous, about their interests as well as about the music that they love.

Maddie Denton is a third-generation fiddle player from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who began playing at the age of five and entered her first fiddle contest two years later.

In addition to her love of contest fiddling, she also enjoys playing a broad range of fiddle styles, her favorite being bluegrass.

As the biggest portion of her fiddling career has been playing Texas contest style, her primary influences have been Daniel Carwile, Terry Morris, Benny Thomasson, and Jim ‘Texas Shorty’ Chancellor. In the bluegrass world, she has studied Stuart Duncan, Alison Krauss, Mark O’Connor, and Jim Van Cleve and their contributions to the genre.

Her successes at fiddle contests amount to 14 state championship titles. Since 2008 she has come out on top in the Tennessee Old-Time Fiddlers State Championships three times (in 2009, 2011, and 2016); having won the Junior fiddling title at the 41st Annual Smithville Fiddler’s Jamboree (Tennessee – July 2012) she even went on to win the fiddle-off against her mother, Marcia, to win the Berry C. Williams Memorial award, presented to the best overall fiddler; when a college sophomore, Denton took first place in the fiddle competition at the 36th Annual Uncle Dave Macon Days Festival (July 2013); in 2016 and 2017 she won the Alabama State Fiddle Championships (in Athens, Alabama); and in May 2019 she was the winner of the Randall Franks Trophy at the 1890s Old-Time Fiddle Convention, Ringgold, Georgia.

Also, Denton has state championship awards in Indiana and Kentucky.

If those titles aren’t notable enough, she was the 2009 National Junior Fiddle Champion; in 2011 she was awarded the Charlie Bush Traditional Fiddler Performance Award at the Grand Masters and – leaving her highest honor until last – in 2016 Denton became the first Tennessee-born contestant to ever become the Grand Master Fiddle Champion.

In addition to competing Denton is a judge, being nationally qualified with experience judging the National Old-Time Fiddle Championship, the Grand Master Fiddle Championship and multiple state championships.

Aside from music, she is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) with a degree in Organismal Biology and Ecology, carrying that on into teaching Biology and Environmental Science at Siegel High School where she is also the men’s and women’s assistant golf coach.

Denton’s golfing exploits include playing at MTSU and in the University of Missouri’s Johnie Imes Invitational event wherein she carded a first-round score of six under par (66), which is the second lowest score in MTSU women’s golf history.

Her sporting prowess extends beyond excelling at golf, having played basketball and volleyball, which she loves, when in High School.

During the Novel Coronavirus shutdown, Denton recorded her very first album, which she views as a snapshot of the 21 years in which she has played the fiddle. In addition to some of the tunes she grew up hearing and playing, Maddie’s album also featured her own original music, as well as songs written by her friends Theo MacMillan and Jason Owen.

She comments ….

“It is very special to me that I was able to record my first album with some of my very best friends. Everyone on this album brings a set of unique talents to the table, and I feel fortunate to not only work with them, but to call them friends as well.”

Playin’ In This Town was released on July 1, 2021.

As well as fronting the Maddie Denton Band, she performs currently with at least three other groups – the Theo & Brenna Band, with whom she recorded their March 2019 album, When You Go; the Dan Tyminski Band; and East Nash Grass, featuring on their recently released eponymous CD.

In addition to her immensely talented bandmates, other notable players she has been fortunate to share the stage with include David Grier, Dennis Crouch, Sierra Hull, Justin Moses, Mike Bub, Greg Cahill, Rick Faris, and Carrie Hassler.

She was among the 2021 IBMA Momentum Award Recipients – in the Instrumentalist of the Year category.

When You Come Home by the Maddie Denton Band at the Station Inn, July 21, 2021.

What would you like to drink?

I’d like a cold brew with a splash of heavy cream.

Do you want anything to eat as well?

I’m not big on pastries, but if there’s egg bites then, yes!!

What’s your favorite food?

I love all kinds of food! But if I could have anything in the world right now it’d be my grandmother’s mashed potatoes. I don’t know what she did to make them so wonderful, but nobody could make mashed potatoes like Julia Lewis.

And what would you have to drink with that?

Buttermilk! Most people wrinkle their noses at the thought of drinking buttermilk straight, but I grew up drinking it with every meal.

What’s the nicest meal that you have ever had?

I haven’t had too many “super fancy” or expensive meals. In fact, the thing that makes a meal nice in my mind is simply getting to share it with the people I love most. I am gone a lot playing music (and so are a lot of my closest people), so it’s always nice when our schedules align, and I can come home and eat together with the folks I love.

Let’s talk bluegrass…..

Where/when did you first hear bluegrass music?

I started playing the fiddle when I was five years old. For as long as I can remember, my world has been surrounded by music. Both of my parents are musicians, and I am a third-generation fiddle player as my mom plays, as did her father before her. I started out playing Texas Contest Style fiddle, and my parents were generous enough to pay for lessons and take me all over the country to compete in these competitions. I am thankful for my experience competing in fiddle contests although I haven’t competed much these days.

Back to bluegrass, my dad was a fan of Strength in Numbers, so we played that album on many a road trip when I was younger. However, even though I’d listened to some bluegrass in my early years (mostly Alison Krauss & Union Station, Dan Tyminski, Dolly Parton’s The Grass is Blue album, New Grass Revival, Cadillac Sky, Mountain Heart, and a few others), I didn’t get serious about playing bluegrass myself until my senior year of college. I’d had some success at fiddle contests, but playing bluegrass was very intimidating (mostly due to the improvisation and complete change of mindset from Texas Style fiddle). Once I was bitten by the bluegrass bug, though, I couldn’t stop! So, I finished up my degree in Biology at Middle Tennessee State University and began thinking about how I could have a steady income job, but also pursue my passion for music, and I’ve been burning the candle at both ends ever since!

Which of your own songs do you have a particular liking for?

I honestly haven’t written that many songs. The first song I wrote was inspired by my mom, and the awful thought that there will someday be a time when we are without each other. The song is a celebration of life and I was honored to share it with my mom as a selection on my recent album, Playin’ in This Town. Another tune I’m proud of is a song that I co-wrote with Harry Clark called Bobby Ate the Lutefisk. It’s a quirky instrumental inspired by our favorite television show, King of the Hill.

What about a song written by someone else?

My favorite songwriter of all time is Sting. How he effortlessly combines waves of emotion with beautiful melodies is beyond compare. However, keeping it closer to bluegrass, there are a few songwriters who have moved me that I would like to recognize. Theo and Brenna MacMillan are a brother-sister duo from Kentucky. Individually, they have both written some unique and thought-provoking music. But together, they wrote an inspirational song in the middle of the raging pandemic about the struggles mankind was facing, all while admiring the peacefulness of a robin outside their window. It filled me (and anyone else who listened) with hope during a time of widespread despair, and for that, I’m thankful. Another songwriter who has tugged on my heartstrings is Harry Clark. He’s written several powerful songs, but one of my favorites is one he wrote about his parents’ early days of marriage, called Bismarck. Its sparse melody and dissonant chords combined with a painful love story leaves the listener longing for resolution that never comes.

Which particular album do you like best and why?

Wow, I’m not sure I could condense the vast expanse of incredible bluegrass albums down into just one selection. And I think if I were to choose a favorite album today, tomorrow I might say something different!

You play the fiddle (while writing songs?) …. …

I definitely consider myself a fiddle player more than a songwriter. And, strangely enough, every instrumental I’ve written was while I was playing mandolin. I’m not much of a mandolin player, but something about it lays differently in a way that helps my brain be more creative.

What model is it?

In 1996, a violin maker named Sam Zygmuntowicz was teaching a master class in Italy with this fiddle, which he’d obtained from someone that had only partially completed it. He was going to be demonstrating some techniques to the class, so he completely remade the exterior and varnished it as part of the lesson. Originally, he had not planned to complete his work on this instrument as it was just for demonstration, but something about it appealed to him so he brought it back to New York to finish the project in his own shop. Once he finished it, he played the fiddle as his own personal instrument.

My fiddle teacher at the time, Jim Wood, happened to play a gig with him shortly after. Upon realizing what a quality instrument Sam was playing, my teacher urged him to show me the fiddle, and the rest is history! I have been playing that instrument since I was a teenager and I absolutely love it! Maybe this is weird to say, but I feel like somehow my fiddle and I have the same personalities, and we’ve grown together through the years. We can both be loud and slightly abrasive at times, and maybe a little too honest for our own good (my fiddle’s responsiveness is awesome, but there’s definitely no hiding any wrong notes or slip ups, of which I have plenty, haha!). My fiddle is all or nothing, and that’s one thing I love about it the most. Above all, I am incredibly grateful to my parents for believing in me and trusting me enough to buy me a quality instrument to play when I was young.

Do you play any other instruments?

I play a few other instruments, in fact, the last track on my album is just me playing fiddle, guitar, bass, mandolin, and banjo. I don’t claim to be proficient at any of these instruments though. I do play tenor guitar and frequently back up other competitors at fiddle contests. I played tenor guitar on several tracks on my album as well.

What’s your favorite bluegrass memory?

I have made so many wonderful memories playing bluegrass music that I’m not sure I could condense them all down to just one favorite. I think the highlight of my music career has been playing fiddle in the Dan Tyminski Band. I’ll never forget the moment that Dan asked me to be in the band.

How do you keep fit and healthy when you spend time on the road?

It’s definitely difficult to get exercise and keep up a healthy lifestyle while we are on the road. I love to see all the sights and truly experience all the places I’m fortunate enough to travel with Dan Tyminski, and luckily, our bass player, Grace Davis, does too! If we have free time, Grace and I can usually be found exploring the area around the venue. Whether that be renting bikes to ride around downtown Chicago, or renting kayaks in Wisconsin, or playing in the ocean in St. Augustine, Florida, we are always up for an adventure!

Are you a sports fan? Who do you follow?

I love sports!! I played Division I college golf for Middle Tennessee State University. I also played high school basketball and travel volleyball. I’m a big Tennessee fan but, of course, I have to root for my alma mater anytime they play as well.

What hobbies do you have?

My friend and bandmate Brenna MacMillan and I love to play volleyball. I do still occasionally play golf and, as I have said, I’m usually up for any kind of adventure!

What is the last movie film that you watched?

I don’t watch very many movies, mostly just because I don’t have time to just sit for two hours, but sometimes I will make time for it. The most recent movie I watched was The Village. I’d never seen it before and I’m not much of a scary movie fan, but it was spooky season, so I sat down and decided to give it a try. I really liked it!

What is your favorite film and why?

I think my favorite film of all time would have to be Hoosiers. It’s such an inspirational story, and I watched it a ton when I was a kid so it just gives me all the happy feelings.

Do you get much time to watch TV?

I don’t have much time to watch TV, but I do like to watch while I eat dinner and sometimes when I’m trying to go to sleep at night. My favorite shows are Law and Order SVU, King of the Hill and Family Guy.

What would you be doing if you weren’t involved in bluegrass music?

I can’t imagine a life without bluegrass music. However, I am a biology teacher at Siegel High School, where I also coach golf. This is my fifth-year teaching biology while juggling music as well. If I didn’t have music, I would probably have some existence of a social life, which always seems to take a backseat to music during my free time these days.

The Maddie Denton Band plays Natalie Padilla’s original tune The Breakdown (also at the Station Inn on July 21, 2021) ….

Maddie Denton still lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Marcy Marxer preparing to film All Wigged Out for TV

Posted on May 27, 2021 by Azlyrics

Marcy Marxer, known to bluegrass an old time music lovers from her long-running duo with her partner, Cathy Fink, has announced plans to film her one-woman show, All Wigged Out, for possible television or movie house distribution.

The show, which features a mix of storytelling, music, and comedy, is drawn from Marcy’s six year battle with breast cancer, just recently concluded with her final chemo treatment earlier this year. Her ordeal probably didn’t seem very funny at the start, but Marxer’s sunny disposition and will to survive has allowed her to find humor in even the most challenging times.

The title, All Wigged Out, came from an observation she made about the sense of community that unites people dealing with the life changing – or ending – struggle with cancer.

“There were times when the wig shop gals gave me more information than my doctors. So did conversations with other patients in the chemo room.”

The play was finished last year, with performances scheduled at a number of theaters, until COVID restrictions made that impossible. During that down time, she and Cathy revised the production for film, and are planning to capture it professionally in a small theater this summer with an eye towards a pay-for-view release during Cancer Awareness Month in October of 2021.

To raise the necessary funds, Marxer and Fink have launched a GoFundMe campaign, hoping to raise $100,000 to cover the production costs. That may seem like a big ask, but they have already reached one quarter of that goal, and feel confident that their many fans and friends all across the US and Canada will support this effort.

GoFundMe doesn’t allow campaigns to list the various premiums that will be given to donors, but those are posted on Facebook, and include copies of Cathy and Marcy CDs all the way up to private concerts and free streams of the premiere.

They prepared this video to explain the fundraiser.

GoFundMe allows for easy and secure donations to be made using PayPal or major credit cards. Since these donations are made through the Institute of Musical Traditions, they are tax deductible as well.

Moments in Bluegrass BG75 #7 – Foggy Mountain Boys on TV

Posted on August 4, 2020 by Azlyrics

Following an invitation that the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) extended to its members that they share a memory from “75 years of bluegrass”, we thought that we would collect a few to share with you.

Beginning in February 1981 when she started working with Sugar Hill Records, Penny Parsons has spent almost 40 years involved in bluegrass music, with roles in marketing and promotional work, as a publicist (at MerleFest and Rebel Records), in sales (at Record Depot and  C-15 Distribution), and as a Director of Public Relations at The Virginia Museum of Radio Entertainment. Concurrent with some of those she has run her own business that also included production and management. She is the co-author of The Bluegrass Music Cookbook (1997) and has contributed many articles to Bluegrass Unlimited magazine.

Penny Parsons has two IBMA awards – for Recorded Event of the Year (as producer) for the Classic Country Gents Reunion album (1990) and for the excellent Curly Seckler biography, Foggy Mountain Troubadour (Print Media Person of the Year, 2016), the high point in her career ……..

Wednesday, February 2, 1955 was the first time that Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys appeared on their own television program. The live show aired weekly on WSAZ-TV in Huntington, West Virginia, from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., and was sponsored by Martha White Mills.

Within weeks after this first appearance, the Foggy Mountain Boys had begun doing live programs in Knoxville, Johnson City, and Jackson, Tennessee. Over the next year and a half, they added Atlanta, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Florence, South Carolina. Soon they were traveling a 2,500-mile circuit every week to perform live on TV, until they were finally able to record their programs at WSM-TV in Nashville for distribution in multiple markets.

Although there were many factors that contributed to the tremendous success of Flatt & Scruggs, television is certainly one of the most significant. TV gave them unprecedented exposure and name recognition and helped make them the most successful bluegrass band of their time.

Before I Met You was recorded on January 23, 1955 at Castle Studio, The Tulane Hotel, 206 8th Avenue North, Nashville, – Lester Flatt (vocals/guitar), Earl Scruggs (vocals/banjo) and The Foggy Mountain Boys – Curly Seckler (vocals/mandolin), Paul Warren (fiddle), Jake Tullock (bass) – with Eddie Hill (rhythm guitar).

This TV recording features Josh Graves …

You Can Feel It In Your Soul was recorded at the same session. The video clip is thought to be from a 1956 Martha White Show.

Having a Coffee with Nate Lee

Posted on July 27, 2020 by Azlyrics

This is fun series in which we ask bluegrass music personalities, some famous, some not so famous, about a few of their interests, as well as about the music that they love.

Nate Lee is a 2015 IBMA Momentum Award winning instrumentalist and renowned teacher, with more than 17 years’ experience providing private lessons and instruction at music camps.

He is a member of the IBMA Leadership Bluegrass committee and a 2014 graduate of the program.

Lee comes from a family of artists; including actors, a tattoo artist, a banjo builder. and several siblings who are “pretty handy” with a pencil, pen, or paintbrush. Every member of his immediate family enjoys playing music as a hobby.

Although he didn’t pick up an instrument until the age of eight, he was always interested in music. “One of my earliest memories is sitting in front of a record player as a small child, listening to my dad’s records,” Lee relates.

His first performance experiences were with a group of fiddle students lead by his teacher, Valerie Ryals. As Lee gained more experience, he began to play with some local bands in the Dallas area, including Jim Paul Miller’s Garland Square Pickers, Back Porch Tradition, and the Mark Gorman Band.

During his second semester (spring 2006) while attending the Bluegrass and Country Music Program at South Plains College, Lee joined the Alan Munde Gazette. He toured with the band for six years and played fiddle on their second album Made To Last (released in 2008).

Also, Lee played fiddle and drums in Joe Carr’s Western Swing ensemble during the Fall of 2008 / Spring 2009 school year at the Levelland, Texas college.

A fellow member of the Alan Munde Gazette was Steve Smith, and Smith and Lee have continued to play together through the years. In the process, Lee has contributed to five albums by Smith’s band Hard Road / The Hard Road Trio.

When the Alan Munde Gazette stopped performing, he did some fill-in work for various bands, before studying to be a motorcycle mechanic.

However, after regaining his interest in music Lee decided to pursue that as a career and in 2012 he moved to Nashville, started playing gigs around town, recorded with Alan Tomkins, and did some touring with Ashleigh Caudill, as well as Brad Folk & the Bluegrass Playboys; spent a couple years working with Irene Kelley; before doing some fill-in work with Town Mountain – for a month long tour to Germany and ten-day tour of the Midwest; and then joining the Jim Hurst Trio, with whom he recorded an album JHT-1 (2016) and for which he wrote an original tune.

In 2017 he joined the Becky Buller Band playing mandolin and fiddle, helping on her Crepe Paper Heart and her latest release. Prior to that he had assisted Buller on the recording of her The Christmas 45, Vol. 1.

In the past few years Lee has released a few individual projects; his Plays Well With Others six-track solo album (September 2017), the popular teaching DVD, How To Play A Solo (On A Song You’ve Never Heard Before) (June 2018) and Wings of a Jetliner (Adverb Records, June 2020).

Members of the Becky Buller Band call Lee “the bluegrass points guy” because of his affinity for earning airline miles and maximizing other rewards.

What would you like to drink?

Pour-over Ethiopian coffee, black. Preferably made with freshly ground beans from Milagro Coffee y Espresso.

Do you want anything to eat as well?

A Texas style Czech cream cheese kolache sounds good!

What’s your favorite food?

Whataburger! I literally have dreams about Whataburger.

And what would you have to drink with that?

Unsweet iced tea, Whatasized.

What’s the nicest meal that you have ever had?

That’s a tough one! One really nice and special meal was on the Bluegrass Jamboree tour in Germany in 2014. A chef prepared Texas style BBQ ribs for us, and he really nailed it!

Let’s talk bluegrass….. Where/when did you first hear bluegrass music?

When I was about eight years old my brother started bringing home cassette tapes with bluegrass on them. Shortly after, my dad found The Tony Rice Video Collection on VHS and that was when I first heard many of my heroes.

Which of your own songs / tunes do you have a particular liking for?

Serenity on my new album Wings of a Jetliner is my current favorite, named for the spaceship on the TV show, Firefly. I wrote it with Todd Phillips and Wyatt Rice’s rhythmic style in mind, and they made such a perfect groove on that song. Serenity makes me feel like a leaf on the wind!

What about a song written by someone else?

Somewhere Far Away, written by Brad Folk and Nick Woods. That’s always been a favorite song since I first heard Brad sing it. I cut it on Wings of a Jetliner and it’s one of my favorite cuts on the album.

Which particular album do you like best and why?

Manzanita. Tony’s singing and Sam Bush’s mandolin playing are my favorite parts, and the way the band plays together as a unit is amazing. Sam’s solo on Old Train is my all-time favorite mandolin solo.

You play a mandolin …. … What model is it?

I play Pava Mandolins, and my main axe is Pava #194, named “Wonderbat,” after Homer Simpson’s baseball ball. It’s my favorite mandolin I’ve ever played.

What’s your favorite bluegrass memory?

Sword fighting Sam Bush with fiddle bows for the Becky Buller Band’s “What would you do for your BlueChip pick” video. You can find that video on YouTube on the B3 channel.

How do you keep fit and healthy when you spend so much time on the road?

I think ice cream is an important part of a balanced road diet. The official after-gig beverage of the Becky Buller Band is a chocolate malt. Only with malt powder though, malt syrup is for the birds.

Are you a sports fan? Who do you follow?

I don’t follow sports, but I enjoy going to watch the Nashville Sounds play baseball.

What hobbies do you have?

I play chess every day, and I also enjoy video games. Ratchet & Clank and Call of Duty are my go-to video games. My song Quick Select is named after the equipment menu on Ratchet & Clank.

What is the last movie film that you watched?

I watched Jay and Silent Bob Reboot recently. Kevin Smith and the rest of the cast really nailed it.

Do you get much time to watch TV?

My current favorites are The Blacklist, and The Rookie. I like to play mandolin while I watch TV, and I wrote Rook Roller while watching The Rookie.

What would you be doing if you weren’t involved in bluegrass music?

I’m a very business-minded person, so I’d probably still be running my own business, and I’d probably be teaching something.

I’ve been in the music business since I was a teenager. My company is called Nate Lee, LLC, and it has a performance side, and a music instruction side. My music instruction business, Play Nately, provides private live online lessons, instructional videos, and music workshops taught by myself and a few other teachers.

From Ovilla, Texas, Nate Lee now lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife, Chrisanthi, and recently-born son, Charlie.

Walter Benjamin – Your House Lyrics

Posted on April 24, 2020 by Azlyrics

It’s so windy back home
Little girl
Where the TV screen goes to sleep
And your tiny dances should rule
The outside world
I am a glad outsider just to watch you dance
I am a glad outsider just to watch you dance
Will you let me in sometime
Just enter the gate
And go upstairs
Like God?
I’ve heard you used to bash the keys
In the morning
Before it all started to make sense

It all made sense to you
But I have never seen the truth written in your books
I have never seen the truth written in your books
It was left on the ashtrays
Where we used to finish our cigarettes
– and they’re over now
Will you let me in sometime
Just enter the gate
And go upstairs
Like God?
Your ghosts look beautiful to me
Your ghosts look beautiful to me

AJR – Role Models Lyrics

Posted on September 21, 2018 by Azlyrics

[Intro]
3, 4

[Chorus]
All my role models are on TV for the wrong reasons
And, I will unravel if you rip away my best pieces
Would’ve never come so far, without someone there to start again
I truly love the art, when I kinda hate the artist
But, All my role models are on TV for the wrong reasons
Wrong reasons

[Verse 1]
This time of year, I’m feelin’ weird, might be allergies
Wanna move out, but when I move out, who’ll be proud of me
Thought I was made, from [?], put that crown on me
Thought I was made, from Louis C.K

[Chorus]
But, all my role models are on TV for the wrong reasons
(Ah, Ahhhhhh, Ah, Ahhhhhh.)
And, I will unravel if you rip away my best pieces
(Ah, Ahhhhhh, Ah, Ahhhhhh.)
Would’ve never come so far, without someone there to start again
I truly love the art, when I kinda hate the artist
But, All my role models are on TV for the wrong reasons
(Ah, Ahhhhhh, Ah, Ahhhhhh.)
Wrong reasons

[Verse 2]
I used to say, just what’s on my brain, cause you always did
You used to be, so special to me, now you’ve taken it
Look at this mess, should I forget, what you gave to me?
Look at this mess, wake up Mr. West

[Chorus]
Cause, all my role models are on TV for the wrong reasons
(Ah, Ahhhhhh, Ah, Ahhhhhh.)
And, I will unravel if you rip away my best pieces
(Ah, Ahhhhhh, Ah, Ahhhhhh.)
Would’ve never come so far, without someone there to start again
I truly love the art, when I kinda hate the artist
But, All my role models are on TV for the wrong reasons
(Ah, Ahhhhhh, Ah, Ahhhhhh.)
Wrong reasons

Would’ve never come so far, without someone there to start again
I truly love the art, when I kinda hate the artist
But, All my role models are on TV for the wrong reasons
(Ah, Ahhhhhh, Ah, Ahhhhhh.)
Wrong reasons

Damian Marley – Patience lyrics

Posted on September 12, 2018 by Azlyrics

Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, yonkontê
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, kiye ni kêra môgô
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, yonkontê
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, kagni ni kêra môgô

Some of the smartest dummies
Can’t read the language of Egyptian mummies
An’ a fly go a moon
And can’t find food for the starving tummies
Pay no mind to the youths

Cause it’s not like the future depends on it
But save the animals in the zoo
Cause the chimpanzee dem a make big money
This is how the media pillages

On the TV the picture is savages in villages
And the scientist still can’t explain the pyramids, huh
Evangelists making a living on the videos of ribs
Of the little kids, stereotyping the image of the images

And this is what the image is, you buy a khaki pants
And all of a sudden you say a Indiana Jones
An’ a thief out gold and thief out the scrolls
And even the buried bones
Some of the worst paparazzis I’ve ever seen and I ever known

Put the worst on display so the world can see
And that’s all they will ever show so the ones in the west
Will never move east and feel like they could be at home
Dem get tricked by the beast

But a where dem ago flee when the monster is fully grown?
Solomonic linage whe dem still can’t defeat
And them coulda never clone, my spiritual DNA
That print in my soul and I will forever own Lord

Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, yonkontê
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, kiye ni kêra môgô
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, yonkontê
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, kagni ni kêra môgô

Huh, we born not knowing, are we born knowing all?
We growing wiser, are we just growing tall?
Can you read thoughts, can you read palms?
Huh, can you predict the future, can you see storms, coming?

The earth was flat if you went too far you would fall off
Now the earth is round if the shape change again
Everybody woulda start laugh
The average man can’t prove of most of the things
That he chooses to speak of

And still won’t research
And find out the root of the truth that you seek of
Scholars teach in Universities
And claim that they’re smart and cunning

Tell them find a cure when we sneeze
And that’s when their nose start running
And the rich get stitched up, when we get cut
Man a heal dem broken bones in the bush with the wed mud

Can you read signs, can you read stars?
Can you make peace, can you fight war?
Can you milk cows, even though you drive cars
Huh, can you survive, against all odds, now?

Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, yonkontê
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, kiye ni kêra môgô
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, yonkontê
Sabali, Sabali, Sabali, kagni ni kêra môgô

Who wrote the Bible, who wrote the Qur’an?
And was it a lightning storm
That gave birth to the earth
And then dinosaurs were born? Damn

Who made up words, who made up numbers?
And what kind of spell is mankind under?
Everything on the planet we preserve and can it
Microwaved it and try it
No matter what we’ll survive it

What’s hu, what’s man, what’s human?
Anything along the land we consuming
Eatin’, deletin’, ruin, trying to get paper
Gotta have land, gotta have acres

So I can sit back like Jack Nicholson
Watch niggas play the game like the lakers
In a world full of 52 fakers
Gypsies, seances, mystical prayers

You superstitious? Throw salt over your shoulders
Make a wish for the day
‘Cause like somebody got a doll of me
Stickin’ needles in my arteries but I can’t feel it

Sometimes it’s like ‘pardon me
But I got a real big spirit’, I’m fearless, I’m fearless
Don’t you try and grab hold of my soul
It’s like a military soldier since seven years old

I held real dead bodies in my arms
Felt their body turn cold, oh
Why we born in the first place
If this is how we gotta go? Damn

Charli XCX – Over You Lyrics

Posted on September 12, 2018 by Azlyrics

[Verse 1]
Just a little girl on a TV screen
Stuck inside a silver cage
Body tangled up in chains
Looking for the light in the misery
Trapped behind the windowpane
Everyday I feel the same

Close to giving up, giving everything
Struggling for air, I’m blue
Fucking with my head, confused
Sick and tired of drinking your sympathy
Fighting back, not gonna lose
It’s true, I’m through, flying with you

[Chorus]
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, are you over me?
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, will you ever regret me?
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, are you over me?
I’m so over you
Promise, baby, that you will never forget me

[Verse 2]
Breaking down the doors, I’m invincible
See if you could stop me now
Super heroine, no doubt
Treating me like I was invisible
Thought that you could shut my mouth
But now I’m gonna burn you out

[Chorus]
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, are you over me?
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, will you ever regret me?
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, are you over me?
I’m so over you
Promise, baby, that you will never forget me

[Bridge]
I want to get out of here
I want to get out of here
We’re breaking up, I’m breaking down (Woah-oh-oh)
I want to get out of here
I want to get out of here
I’m moving on, we’re over now, over now (Oh!)

[Chorus]
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, are you over me?
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, will you ever regret me?
I’m so over you
Tell me, baby, are you over me?
I’m so over you
Promise, baby, that you will never forget me

Mick Jenkins – What Am I To Do Lyrics

Posted on August 27, 2018 by Azlyrics

[Intro]
Well I sbet ya
Well I bet ya
Well I bet ya
Well I bet…

[Verse 1]
Ali’s jabbin’ them shit feel like hooks
The less you got stuffed in your pocket books
The more these policies just sound like crooks
They give me sloppy looks
They gave us nothing, had to hustle same way coffee cook
Early morning grind trying to help these niggas wake up
Etch A Sketch flows, I got the shit to shake up
Niggas switching clothes
Niggas even switch their face up
But these clowns could never really switch their make up
Family’s in your genes
Fuck is that, Mesquite?
My triple beam onto bigger schemes
I’m on these waves
Don’t expect a hand clap cause you swim upstream
I’m expecting sand traps, I be in the green
If we talking green backs I’m back in the black
Been having the formula since Similac
Delicate flows under heavy metal bars but they’re still intact
What’s a nigga to do?
When you call the police but the trigger’s on you
Shit crazy man

[Chorus]
What’s a nigga to do?
Cause I be streaming black they’ll beat me to blue
Put it on TV then tell you what’s true
What’s a nigga to do?
What’s a nigga to do?
When you call the police but the trigger’s on you

[Verse 2]
Pull up on ’em shining CeCe Winans with the C notes
Redefining everything the black man denotes
I could devote time
How many times have we rewrote lines to get it perfect
Miss me with inertia I’m on dirt
You gon’ need assumptions, almost certain
My assertion we gon’ see if you got gumption
We gon’ see if you gon’ play it smart or you gon’ be on dumb shit
Wrong answer, we go dumb shit
Slow you up on some speed bump shit
On some ski jump shit
I’m taking flight cause all my flows cold
Setting bars, no [?]
I never blow smoke unless it’s unleaded
I guess you won’t know my worst
No unedited stress
Go on wax, I mean

[Chorus]
What’s a nigga to do?
When you tell ’em who you is and they be like “Who?”
What’s a nigga to do?
Yeah, what’s a nigga to do?
Cause I be streaming black they’ll beat me to blue
Put it on TV then tell you what’s true
What’s a nigga to do?
What’s a nigga to do?

Rich The Kid – Lot On My Mind Lyrics

Posted on July 8, 2018 by Azlyrics

[Intro]
I see you. I see [?]
Haha, you dig?
I see you haters having problems
Way too many problems
Mic check, check, check, check, check, check
Check, check, check, check

[Verse 1]
Ooh, where my mic check?
These bitches, they been all at my neck (lil bitch!)
These bitches, all in my call log
You ain’t put your team on, you ain’t a boss, dog
Can’t even let these niggas close
Jealous homies set you up and now you smoke (now you smoke)
You just spent up all the money, now you broke (now you broke)
You been internet flexin’ for these hoes (hoes)
Whole lot of friends turned to enemies
Smile in my face and said they proud of me
Now they lookin’ at me like I hit the lottery
‘Cause I’m rich but bitch, you ain’t gotta lie to me
Ooh, I done watched some niggas change up
They hit for me a couple pieces, we don’t chain tuck
Too much ice, bust down, I’m still rained up
And if some niggas wanna try me, get your brain fucked
She gon’ fuck me ’cause I’m famous, post my picture up
I call Boris, that’s my driver, he gone pick you up
Couple losses but more wins, we still racked up
On the road, doin’ shows, I’m so booked up

[Vocal Break]

[Verse 2]
Ooh, Cartier on me
Made my first mil’, shit I was still hungry
Back then all them hoes, they was flexin’ on me
See me on TV, now she sexin’ on me
Got the Maybach, finna cop the Wraith on ’em
Naw, for real they gon’ hate on me
And I got your bitch been missin’, she gon’ wait on me
Told double XL I was straight on it (haha)
I’m finally rich, I knew that they would hate on me (rich!)
They ran up in the crib and had the K on me
I was slippin’, thank God that I’m livin’
‘Cause it all could’ve been different
‘Bout to put these stars in my ceiling
‘Cause my bitch straight from heaven
Rich Forever, bitch I’m in it
Get a check then I spend it

[Outro]
R.I.P X, man
You know what I’m sayin?
Young niggas get that bag, man
Get that bag, stay humble
Ya dig, and that’s that
Get a rack packs and back backs

Florida Georgia Line – Talk You Out of It Lyrics

Posted on July 5, 2018 by Azlyrics

[Verse 1]
Girl I know you had a long day
You ain’t feelin’ them downtown lights
But I got a bottle at your favorite place
Just waitin’ for us in a bucket on ice

Damn, I didn’t think it’d be that easy
‘Cause now you’re gettin’ ready
I’m just sittin’ there watchin’ TV
Here you come lookin’ like a grown man’s dream
Damn, I can’t believe, I can’t believe

[Chorus]
I talked you into slippin’ down the hall, baby, turn it on
Your playlist you play when you’re in the shower
Talked you into taking up my time, making up your mind
Switching back and forth for an hour
And now you’re lookin’ like a line from a Vandross song
I’m looking at the fine little dress you got on
Don’t get me wrong, girl, I love it
Now I just wanna talk you out of it

[Verse 2]
Yeah, as cool at it would be
Watchin’ people wonder who you are
Oh, we should just say we did, we can start with a kiss
And pretend we just got back from the bar

[Bridge]
Yeah, it’s a little cold outside
The music’s probably way too loud
To hear you laugh
And there’s a look in your eyes
Looks like we ain’t leavin’ now
Girl, I’m so glad, I’m so glad

Elliott Smith – Some Song Lyrics

Posted on July 2, 2018 by Azlyrics

Hello, hello, hello
(This is a rock song.)
Loud, loud, loud

It’s a junkie dream, makes you so uptight
Yeah it’s halloween tonight and every night
See you scratch your skin
Your sandpaper throat
You’re a symphony, man, with one fucking note
Charlie beat you up week after week
And when you grow up you’re going to be a freak
Want a violent girl who’s not scared of anything

Help me kill my time
‘Cause I’ll never be fine
Help me kill my time

You went down to look at old Dallas town
Where you must be sick just to hang around
Seen it on TV, how to kill your man
Then like Gacy’s scene a canvas in your hand
Better call your mom, she’s out looking for you
In the jail and the army and the hospital too
But those people there couldn’t do anything
For you

Help me kill my time
‘Cause I’ll never be fine
Help me kill my time
Help me kill my time
Help me kill my time
‘Cause I’ll never be fine
Help me kill my time

Katy Perry – Nothing Like the First Time Lyrics

Posted on June 12, 2018 by Azlyrics

[Verse 1]
The leaves were falling I was seventeen
We’d been locking lips, grabbing hips, smoking cigarettes
We took a drive in your 1990 the hand me down
From out of town I was California
Oh my legs were not shaved
And you had dirt between your fingers
They told us to behave, but hey

[Chorus]
It’s not like riding a bike
It’s not like flying a kite
It’s not as easy as pie
There’s nothing like the first time
Not like taking a bath
It’s not like having a laugh
Not like reading a map
There’s nothing like the first time

[Verse 2]
I had seen it in the magazines
We would change the channel on the TV screen
‘Cause it’s such a sin what you did to me
Straight to hell is what they sell if you done the deed
Oh but what could be so bad
Oh if everyone is guilty
I guess we want what we can’t have
‘Cause I’ve heard…

[Chorus]
It’s not like riding a bike
It’s not like flying a kite
It’s not as easy as pie
There’s nothing like the first time
Not like taking a bath
It’s not like having a laugh
Not like reading a map
There’s nothing like the first time

[Bridge]
Do you remember? Do you remember?
Do you remember? Do you remember?
La la la la la la la la
There’s nothing like the first time
La la la la la la la la
There’s nothing like the first time

[Chorus]
It’s not a walk in the park
It’s not a shot in the dark
It’s not a juvenile crime
There’s nothing like the first time
It’s not like tying the knot
There’s no connecting the dots
And in case you forgot
There’s nothing like the first time
There’s nothing like the first time
There’s nothing like the first time
There’s nothing like the first time

[Outro]
Its not like reading a map..oh ya you give me laugh
There’s nothing like the first time

Snail Mail – Static Buzz lyrics

Posted on June 5, 2018 by Azlyrics

Shutters on my house
Keep the sunlight in
If that’s not enough to keep the people out

Then I don’t wanna know what’s on the other side

Turn on the TV
I wonder who thinks of it all
We could be watching the same thing

But I always shock myself when I plug it into the wall

So should I ask?
Are you home?

I can’t keep anything down
All I hear is static buzz
And it’s all echoing through my bedroom wall

Cover me in flies
They’re breaking through the door
That’ll show the garbage man
What everyone else is always so bitter for

So should I ask ? Are you home?

I can’t keep anything down
All I hear is static buzz
And it’s all echoing through my bedroom wall

Paul Luc – Idol lyrics

Posted on June 4, 2018 by Azlyrics

I turn the television on
To hear those songbirds carry on
I tune into that drab recital
They’d claimed I’d find a brand new idol
It felt like something good was dying
Oh, something good was dying
She sang a ledgendary song
With something desperately wrong
There were fourteen-thousand notes inside
A space where four plain notes should reside
It felt like mastur~bation on the TV station
Oh, it felt like something good was dying
Oh, something good was dying
Asked about the music she was raised upon
Was it Paul, George, Ringo Starr, and John?
With her mini-skirt and her bashful eyes
Claimed she’d never heard of those four guys
She’d been singin’, “Hey Jude don’t make it bad.”
And now my whole world was sad.
Oh, it felt like something good was dying
Oh, something good was…
So I jumped into my car to drive
I flicked the radio alive
And I heard another shallow song
I turned the dial, that same song was on
Every station; It felt like indoctrination
Like no one’s even trying
Oh, it felt like something good was dy~ing

Saba – BROKEN GIRLS lyrics

Posted on June 3, 2018 by Azlyrics

[Intro]
I’m in love with broken

[Chorus]
I’m in love with broken girls, girls, girls
Hey girl, girl, girl, girl
I’m in love with broken girls, girls, girls
Girls, girls, girls, hey girl

[Verse 1]
Really I’m broke myself, and I think she might help
Really I love a story, and I think she might tell
Really I’m not your crutch, really you not my girl
Really she usin’ me, but it’s cool, we use each oth’
I’m in love with contemplatin’ ’bout the pressure
Conversations ’bout depression
Confrontation cause we care too much about each other
We know it ain’t permanent but temporary
Releasin’ your Issa Rae, insecure
Collect them like Pikachu, Venusaur
We go ’til you done or my penis sore
Sleep with the TV on then we don’t speak no more
And I know when I’m with you, or maybe when you’re with me
Even if I don’t feel a thing, for a second I feel complete
I still’ll keep ya in my back pocket
I know that I’m not shit, I know that it’s toxic
I know that a part lives, that is where your heart is

[Chorus]
I’m in love with broken girls, girls, girls
Hey girl, girl, girl, girl
I’m in love with broken girls, girls, girls
Girls, girls, girls, hey girl

[Verse 2]
Tread light like broken glass, really I’m not my past
Really I snatched your soul, really that’s not to brag
Really when I’m alone, really I’m not to have
Really I know you’re empty but I think I can fill your glass
Fantasizin’ all your problems
I wanted you more since I found out you heartless
Harborin’ feelins’ for niggas who hurt you
Know you on the surface but not on a personal level
I play the game of hearts
Missin’ piece, we ain’t apart
Depend on me until I’m bored
I return your heart as quick I return your call
Tables turn quicker cause after a weekend I miss ya
I don’t want you but I’m conflicted
I know that back and forth yo-yo shit over with
But you gon’ take me back, I’m gon’ convince ya
Pain ain’t never looked so temptin’
Lonely never looked so distant, we just gon’ ignore the tension
You know we both not shit, I know that shit toxic

[Chorus]
I’m in love with broken girls, girls, girls
Hey girl, girl, girl, girl
I’m in love with broken girls, girls, girls
Girls, girls, girls, hey girl

[Verse 3]
This whole time, been obsessed, being sad
She was my, quick escape, made me forget
Hear her speak, see her weak, made me feel big
Crowned me, she downed me, treat me like shit
Second time, round two, what I learn?
She weren’t mine, that weren’t love, I weren’t hers
I’m not hurt, anymore, took some time
Found a girl, now I’m hers, and she mine
And she make me, feel whole, heal me
And it’s, mutual, and we still in love

[Outro]
Can’t you care for?
Can’t you care? Can’t you care?
Can’t you care for?
Can’t you care? Can’t you care?
Can’t you care? Can’t you care?
Can’t you care? Can’t you care?
Can’t you care? Can’t you care?
Can’t you care? Can’t you care?

070 Shake – Rewind lyrics

Posted on June 2, 2018 by Azlyrics

(feat. Lil Yachty)

[Verse 1: Lil Yachty]
You know you was wrong
And you know you fucked up when you left me
And you know that I’m headed so high
Your new guy, your new guy is going so down
Your new guy, you can’t bring around me
You can’t bring around us
Cause if you do, you found me
You know you was wrong
That’s why when you see me on your new TV
You change the channel
Cause you know you was wrong
And now you know that I’m gone
Oh, I’m gone, I’m so gone
And you wish
Oh yeah, you wish that you could return the time
You wish you could rewind
You wish you could rewind my mind

[Verse 2: 070 Shake]
My crew is so fucked up
Take it in and get your doses up
If they ask you, you don’t know of us
And they’ll go, they’ll go so hard for you
Pitty-pitty-pitty
She been asking why all around the city
Don’t be asking why, I ain’t even kidding
You know what you’ve done
Giving me your back cause I dont like the front
Now you got some offers I don’t need none
You wish, you wish you could rewind the time
LA come all of the lights
Smoke it all up til we dry
We become vamps in the night
Vamps in the night

Dan Bull – Fallout 76 Rap Song Lyrics

Posted on May 31, 2018 by Azlyrics

{Whistling}

[Verse 1]
The night before the morning after
What life was like before the blast?
I’m sure I couldn’t recall or tell you now
What good’s a fallen past?
Life inside these walls is all I have
And all I seem to know
But we need fresh water flowing
For the seed to grow
I’ve been in this vault for twenty years
And witnessed the fall of as many peers
But there aren’t any enemies here
Except the lack of fresh frontiers
And since the bomb hit
I’ve been sitting in
Living in this little hovel
As a model citizen
With everything
To keep me alive
But not to keep me living life
Sick of being inside
I’d give my TV to see the other side
There’s a new world to behold
So open an ice old Nuka-cola
Stroll on through the smouldering ruins
Wiser now you’re clued up, older
Life will knock you to the floor
The rifle stock will bruise your shoulder
But beauty still finds refuge
In the eye of the beholder
We’re the sole hope
To keep our people’s home from defeat
With our control vault complete
We hit CTRL ALT DELETE
Reset the whole of humanity’s travels
Unravel the rope that is holding us back
‘Cause now that the commies and anarchists
Aren’t in the plan
We can finally follow the path
Come up from below deck
Of the vault-tec ship
It’s all wrecked
And behold breadth never told
Trek through a whole sector
Of old America
Feel old yet?
You will when you feel the cold breath
On your bald flesh
On your cold neck
In a cold sweat
Feel the rush there isn’t any gold left
Oh heck
This wasn’t in the control test
I guess it’s time to settle old debts
So get ready for more heavenly hits
From me
The Soldier of 76

[Chorus]
I don’t want to set the world on fire
I just want to start a flame in your heart

I don’t want to set the world on fire
I just want to start a flame in your heart

I don’t want to set the world on fire
I just want to start a flame in your heart

Heart~

The Internet – Come Over Lyrics

Posted on May 30, 2018 by Azlyrics

Hello
Hey
You at home right now? (x2)
Nah, not yet
Hit me up when you get home
Call me when you get home
Like 15 minutes
You busy later?
Just keep me posted
I’ll probably be at home honestly
Call me (x3)

Know you wrong
But ‘sho you right
Home alone
For the night
I can turn you on
With my dirty mind
Say I won’t
Worth a try
Puppy love
Butterflies

Made you blush
You made me smile
What you want
Baby you decide
Why we grown
Wasting time

You’re beautiful babe
You’re really something
Stylin’ I gotta say
T-shirt designer jeans
You got me open
Filled with emotion
Living in ecstacy
Just want you next to me
I’ll bring the champagne
Don’t turn me down babe
We can play simon says
Or watch TV in bed
Wake with the sunrise
Sleep in it’s alright
Ain’t even gotta sex

Mmm but, I know what you like
Baby
Can I come over, come over
You’re wasting your time
Baby

If you just let me come over babe
If you just let me come over babe

Know you wrong
But ‘sho you right
Home alone
For the night
I can turn you on
With my dirty mind
Say I won’t
Worth a try
Puppy love
Butterflies
Made you blush
You made me smile
What you want
Baby you decide
Why we grown
Wasting time

Steve
If you just let me come over babe
If you just let me come over babe

Know you wrong
But ‘sho you right
Home alone
For the night
I can turn you on
With my dirty mind
Say I won’t
Worth a try
Puppy love
Butterflies
Made you blush
You made me smile
What you want
Baby you decide
Why we grown
Wasting time

(DIAMOND RANG$)
Aye yo you call yourself being rude to me?
Fuck you too you lil…
You lil broke, yo-

These bitches want diamond rings
Birk bags and other bling
I just don’t feel the same
Vanity’s not my thang

These bitches want diamond rings
These bitches want diamond rings

Jain – Hope lyrics

Posted on May 28, 2018 by Azlyrics

J-A-I-N
J-A-I-N

Uh-ah Uh-ah

[Chorus]
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together

[Verse 1]
Every day, every time
There’s a street and here we are
We are people make the world how it’s going down
So we walked into your lives
No one look deep in the eyes
Except you, take my smile
That’s the only thing I have

[Pre-Chorus]
Hope you’re fine
Hope you’re great
Hope you’re not alone in this town
Hope you have good friend to talk
Hope you will soon find a job
Now you smile right back at me
You see that is what I need

Loving, hoping get for free
I’m gonna need it
I’m gonna use it
I’m gonna need it
I’m gonna use it

[Chorus]
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together

[Verse 2]
You have dreams, too many in a depress of society
For my hair, far to rare stuff
Stop watching TV
I’ll go outside, I’ll walk some more
To see what is next to me
And I saw you and then I knew
How your smile can give some peace

[Pre-Chorus]
Hope you love
Hope you’re strong
Hope you will not get it wrong
Stop your bullshit, then make freak
Love is hard but it’s unique

I’m gonna need it
I’m gonna use it
I’m gonna need it
Yeah, I’m gonna use it

[Chorus]
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together
Try to keep up around
Try to keep up in a road
Try to make it better, better together

Daniel Caesar – Take Me Away lyrics

Posted on May 27, 2018 by Azlyrics

(feat. Syd of The Internet)

[Verse 1: Daniel Caesar]
Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy creation
See what Jah has done
Every time she tops me off, it’s celebration, yeah
What has life become?
And we don’t talk too much
Could this be a strange new love I’ve got
Plus she’s always got that loud pack
Inspiration for this soundtrack
Every time she throws that ass back, all she says is

[Chorus: Daniel Caesar]
Take me away
Take me away
Take me away
Take me away

[Verse 2: Daniel Caesar]
Every time I go inside of your protected
Place with reverence
I’m reminded of a time I was neglected
It seems you’re heaven sent
She loves to top me off
She’s cut from the finest cloth, my love
Plus, we like to take it easy
All she wants to do is please me
Every time I’m on that TV, calls me up, says

[Chorus: Daniel Caesar & Syd]
Take me away
Take me away
Take me away (Won’t you please take me away baby, ‘way baby)
(Won’t you please take me away)
Take me away (I like the way you say my name baby, name baby)
(Won’t you please take me away)
Take me away
Take me away

[Outro: Syd]
Wherever you go, just take me, take me, take me
Would you take me, baby
Take (Take me away)
Want you take me away, take me away (Take me)
Take me away, take me away
If it’s the last thing
Want you to take me away, take me away (Take me)
Take me away, take me away
Take me

(feat. PnB Rock)

[Intro: 03 Greedo]
Yeah, yeah
Ohh, mmh
Ohh, oh yeah

[Verse 1: 03 Greedo]
No make up on, in her pink panties
I’ma beat that thang down, baby don’t panic
Smelling cookies and cologne, she get so nasty
Can I hit it, she say baby you don’t gotta ask me
Just don’t tell nobody
I won’t tell nobody
Would you suck it if I eat it on the seat, we Posturepedic
Can I hit you on the camera while you watch it on my TV?
Would you love me if I fuck you ’til you’re numb
Soon as I come ’round, make you cum
‘Fore we leave I make her run
I’m a nigga from the slums
No mixtape, burn with the drum
I won’t give a lazy bitch no crumbs
If I met you in the projects would you set me up?
Let them people know I’m ’round you just to wet me up
She like nigga be for real, they won’t mess with us
You took me to the telly, put this on and F it up
Project music got her shaking all that ass
She wanna fuck but she don’t know if I got cash yet
She sent the number but she never sent the address
The total package like it’s squeeze and then she access

[Chorus: 03 Greedo]
You should let a real nigga beat that thang down
I be busy getting rich, yeah I don’t hang out
You won’t meet another nigga with the same style
I’m a beast on these beats and I’m banged out
You should let a real nigga beat that thang down
I be busy getting rich, I don’t hang out
You won’t meet another nigga with the same style
I’m a beast on these beats and I’m banged out
Ooh, ooh, I’m a beast on these beats and I’m banged out
Ooh, ooh, I’m a beast on these beats and I’m banged out
You should let a real nigga beat that thang down

[Verse 2: PnB Rock]
You should come through and let me put my thang on it
I’ma fuck around and make you tat my name on you
All them other niggas, they don’t do the same for you
You know me, I don’t play no games with you
Put that shit all on my face
I love they way that you taste
I ain’t got no time, I can’t waste
I just wanna fuck you in my Wraith
Shawty let me fuck you Benz too
Fuck it girl, you should bring your friends too
Let me show you what I get into
Let me show you what I’m into
Grip on your neck when I hit from the back
I’m going crazy, I’m pullin’ on tracks
I’m off of perky, I hope you can last
Go’n on on, baby go’n on on
But we ain’t on no makin’ love shit
We can get high, catch a vibe, I got drugs, yeah
We can get high, catch a vibe, no cuffing
We can get high, catch a vibe, only thug shit

[Chorus: 03 Greedo]
You should let a real nigga beat that thang down
I be busy getting rich, yeah I don’t hang out
You won’t meet another nigga with the same style
I’m a beast on these beats and I’m banged out
You should let a real nigga beat that thang down
I be busy getting rich, I don’t hang out
You won’t meet another nigga with the same style
I’m a beast on these beats and I’m banged out
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh, I’m a beast on these beats and I’m banged out
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh, you should let a real nigga beat that thang

[Outro: PnB Rock]
Ooh ooh, ooh-ooh ooh
Ooh ooh, you should let a real nigga beat that thang down

Jessie J – Dopamine lyrics

Posted on May 19, 2018 by Azlyrics

[NOT FULL]

Open up your eyes now
Turn the TV on and watch the news now
The world is blowing up but we’re liking pictures
The police be gunning up, fuck celebs that distract by beefing
Way up in difference
Oh man, we trippin’
They got us talking ’bout shit we playin’ some mission
Some real, some fiction
Man, fuck the system
They got us tweeting hype, to hide the issue
We’re addicted to the dopamine

Kehlani – How We Do Us lyrics

Posted on May 17, 2018 by Azlyrics

(feat. Kyle Dion)

[Verse 1: Kyle Dion and Kehlani]
Love shouldn’t be defined
Love is one of a kind
What we do is crazy baby
All the ways you make me feel
The way you do me like that
The way you do me like that
We just understand what nobody else can
[Kehlani]
You know how to put it down
How to pick me up and never cause me stress
Every day’s a rush
You always cracking jokes and always make me blush
I could stand the world if it was just us
Every day you love me so
Never let you go
When I say it’s on you’ll never tell me no
That’s love baby
That’s us baby

[Chorus: Both]
You know ain’t explaining all this love we making
They think that we’re crazy but it’s us
Cause this is how we do us baby
This is how we do us baby

[Verse 2: Kehlani]
Don’t you hate it when they get to asking all them questions ’bout the way we rockin’
Like, we gotta have a separate title or something
Gotta be on TV like the idols or something
Cause baby boy this ain’t no way that I could ever begin to explain
The way we love
The way we trust
The bond we have
It’s just for us
Just for us
Telling me, yeah we’re soul mates
I knew it ever since our very first date yeah
You the truth
I need the whole thing
But I won’t risk putting this love at stake
For a simple explanation to a simple muthafucka
Who really don’t know us
Really don’t wanna
I mean it when I say it, that I only wanna love ya
That other shit is extra
Baby far above it now
I know sometimes I do a little much
I know sometimes you got a little problems with your trust
But that’s love baby
That’s us baby

[Chorus: Both]
You know ain’t explaining all this love we making
They think that we’re crazy but it’s us
Cause this is how we do us baby
This is how we do us baby

[Bridge: Kyle Dion and Kehlani]
[Kyle]
You’re the only one I want and I can never leave your side
You’re always here down to ride
You’re always here and that’s why
I fu-u-u-uck with you
[Kehlani]
Said he fucking with me cause I’m down
He know every single lyric
He at every single show and
Baby that’s why I’m in love with you

[Chorus: Both]
You know ain’t explaining all this love we making
They think that we’re crazy but it’s us
Cause this is how we do us baby

Joyner Lucas & Chris Brown – I Don’t Die lyrics

Posted on May 3, 2018 by Azlyrics

[Intro: Joyner Lucas]
Joyner, Joyner, Joyner, Joyner, Joyner
Woo, woo, woo, woo, woo!

[Pre-Chorus: Joyner Lucas]
Mind your motherfuckin’ bid’ness, ain’t nothin’ you gotta see
How you all up in my shit when you got more problems than me?
Yeah, I’m cool but you don’t wanna see that other side of me
And my niggas mobbin’ deep, hoe, I’m a fuckin’ prodigy
I know, I know that you been envy, bitch, it ain’t that hard to see
Don’t you dare go fix your mouth to tell me that you proud of me
Ain’t no choice to me but loyalty still means a lot to me
Some niggas’ll gon’ chop my arm right off and still reach out to me
I know you probably want that

[Chorus: Chris Brown, Joyner Lucas & Both]
You want that ambulance to pick me up and take me on that ride, yeah
Hoping that they don’t revive a nigga and bring me back to life
And you shot me down, shot me down, shot me down, shot me down
Shot me down, that’s all right (buck, buck) I don’t die

[Verse 1: Joyner Lucas]
B-b-bad to the bone
Everybody wanna be so motherfuckin’ bad ’til they ass be alone
Now you back in the cold
And I’m laughin’ at every single fact that they don’t want me on half of these songs
It was that from the go, just a bunch of little spoilt fuckin’ bastards
Every single one ’em would laugh at my joke
Niggas pass the Patrón
I think I’ma go and drink it until I pass out in the back of the Rover
Ménage on my mind (ayy) I’ve been on my grind (woo)
Been through so much, sometimes think that God ain’t on my side (yeah)
I cut all my friends off then say y’all ain’t on my vibe
And it’s so much more to life than drinkin’, party all the time, woah
This gon’ last a lifetime (lifetime) no more Mister Nice Guy (Nice Guy)
I text Jaden Smith and told that nigga he a icon (icon)
Don’t get shit fucked up just cause I ain’t got no ice on
Don’t mean I am not Sub-Zero, I should freeze you hoes at night time
I’m like, where the hell you been at? I’ve been doin’ this
Since I was a kid and my grandma used to ask me where my head at
Always in trouble, ’cause I was never learnin’ nothin’
Except how to muscle my way into the game with no setbacks
All that’s been sleepin’ on me, fuck it, where the bed at?
‘Cause I’ve been strugglin’, tryna be on top of them other niggas
Blind for me, but fuck it, doesn’t mean nothin’
If their music ain’t really cuttin’ it they can hit the g-g-gutter
One day y’all gon see me (see me) I make shy look freaky (freaky)
I make dry look greasy (woo) I make hard look easy (easy)
I remember way back when my momma took my TV, hoe
Now I’m all on TV, hoe (woo)

[Pre-Chorus: Joyner Lucas]
Mind yo motherfuckin’ bid’ness, ain’t nothin’ you gotta see
How you all up in my shit when you got more problems than me?
Yeah, I’m cool but you don’t wanna see that other side of me
I don’t want to hear no sorrys, bitch, fuck your apology
I know, I know that you been envy, damn, it ain’t that hard to see
I don’t wanna get to know you, no please, don’t say hi to me
Ain’t no choice to me but loyalty still means alot to me
Some niggas’ll gon’ chop my arm right off and still reach out to me
I know you probably want that

[Chorus: Chris Brown, Joyner Lucas & Both]
You want that ambulance to pick me up and take me on that ride, yeah
Hoping that they don’t revive a nigga and bring me back to life
And you shot me down, shot me down, shot me down, shot me down
Shot me down, that’s all right (buck, buck) I don’t die

[Verse 2: Chris Brown]
That’s why a nigga ride ’round with a weapon
Better that than me lyin’ on a stretcher
Gunshot (pow, pow, pow!) applyin’ all the pressure
Potato on the chopper, shootin’ through the pillow, blood on the feathers
Rollin’ dice with ya life, all I do is roll 7s (woo)
Eagle on my lap when I walk with the devil
Hit a bitch from the back like I don’t know better
Man, I swear to God you better talk to the reverend
Yeah I’m on a weed high, dehydrated
Her booty fuckin’ skin-tight, Levi made it (yeah, yeah)
Yee-haw, yee-haw, put her in a stable
Keep my cards in my pocket, never put ’em on the table (woo)
Leave her bra on the floor, put my dick up on her naval
Do what I say, don’t give me no ultimatum
Ride around or die, get your life taken
Shit, already went half on a baby (buck, buck, buck, buck)
All these broke bitch ass niggas
Tryna tell a real nigga how to really fuckin’ get a bag (woo)
How you fuckin’ 25 with your first car?
I got 10, that’s why them niggas mad (hey)
Why you wanna hate on progress? (Woo)
Why you wanna keep me in the projects? (Jheeze)
Nigga, why you wanna eat off my check? (Hey)
That’s some weird ass shit, you suspect (hey)
That’s a weird ass bitch, don’t trust that (woo)
Shut the hell up, a nigga ain’t done yet (hey)
All these shots, are you niggas havin’ fun yet? (Buck, buck)
I’ma do it by the book so run that (hey)
Take ya bitch, then I ride into sunset (hey)
Layin’ on the Westside, hit Sunset (hey)
Backwoods, you can find me where the skunk at (hey)
Bullet with ya name on it if you want that

[Chorus: Chris Brown, Joyner Lucas & Both]
You want that ambulance to pick me up and take me on that ride, yeah
Hoping that they don’t revive a nigga and bring me back to life
And you shot me down, shot me down, shot me down, shot me down
Shot me down, that’s all right (buck, buck) I don’t die
